Movie Club - Born in Flames

  • Collective Chemistry 5201 11th Ave NW Seattle United States (map)

March Movie Club - No Man’s Land!

In honor of Women’s History Month, the ladies of Movie Club have chosen three movies with no male characters (or where men play very minor roles) that are directed by women!

As usual, we’ll meet at 6pm at Collective Chemistry except for our bonus (non-themed) outing to THE FIRST SLAM DUNK for the SIFF Movie Club, which starts at 6pm at SIFF Uptown Theater.

March 5: The First Slam Dunk (at SIFF Uptown)

2022, directed by Takehiko Inoue

Unrelated to this series, this is a SIFF Movie Club movie NOT AT COLLECTIVE CHEMISTRY.  Takehiko Inoue adapts his own highly influential 90s basketball manga into a quiet portrait of a broken family - and one of the most thrilling sports movies ever made.

March 12: Born in Flames

1983, directed by Lizzie Borden, 80 min.

The film that rocked the foundations of the 1980s underground, this postpunk provocation is a DIY fantasia of female rebellion set in America ten years after a social-democratic cultural revolution. Filmed guerrilla style on the streets of pre-gentrification New York, BORN IN FLAMES is a Molotov cocktail of feminist futurism that’s both an essential document of its time and radically ahead of it.

March 19: Daisies

1966, directed by Věra Chytilová, 76min.

Two teenage girls named Marie decide that since the world is spoiled, they will be spoiled too. They embark on a series of destructive pranks to rebel against a materialistic society.

March 26: Ladyworld

2018, directed by Amanda Kramer, 93 min.

After a catastrophic event, eight girls find themselves stranded in a house without electricity. As they run out of food and water, their sanity begins to crumble, and soon they regress to their baser instincts.
